Do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Not everyone needs to have a wisdom tooth removal procedure scheduled. Some wisdom teeth come in correctly and don’t cause any problems, while other patients are actually born without wisdom teeth. For those of us who aren’t so lucky, wisdom tooth extractions will need to be performed to prevent the wisdom teeth from crowding and damaging nearby teeth. If you have an impacted wisdom tooth, that means the tooth doesn’t have enough room on the jaw to erupt from the gums, and they can cause pain, swelling, infections, and cysts.

How long does wisdom teeth recovery take?

The recovery process varies from patient to patient, depending on how many wisdom teeth are removed at one time and if you have any impacted wisdom teeth. We typically tell patients to take at least two or three days off from school and work to rest and recover. Once you return to your normal routine, you will still want to avoid doing anything too strenuous, as that can disrupt the healing process. You will also want to continue eating soft foods for a while, but do not drink anything through a straw, as that can cause a dry socket to develop.

When should I schedule wisdom teeth surgery?

The ideal time frame for wisdom teeth removal is usually in a patients’ late teens or early twenties, as the jaw is developed and the recovery process tends to be easier and faster. However, patients can absolutely have their wisdom teeth extracted later in life, especially if they begin causing problems. When we take X-rays during your routine appointments, we will examine your wisdom teeth and tell you when we believe you have reached an ideal point to schedule your treatment. Of course, you should also pick a time when you can take some time off to truly rest and recover as well.
