1. Don’t Overbrush
Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day is one of the best ways you can avoid developing cavities, since they stem from an overgrowth of plaque and bacteria on the surface of your teeth. But be careful not to brush your teeth too hard! Overbrushing can actually damage your enamel, making you more susceptible to developing cavities. Instead, use a soft-bristle brush and brush your teeth using small, gentle circles to preserve your enamel and keep your teeth clean.
2. Avoid Sugar, But Not All Kinds of Sugar
It’s true: sugar leads to cavities. But some types of sugar are far worse for you than others. White sugar and added sugars in candies, pastries, and other desserts make plaque bacteria release tooth-damaging acid when they break them down. But sugars from berries and fruit aren’t as bad for your teeth. However, you should always brush and floss your teeth after you eat, even if you do enjoy a healthy and balanced diet.
3. Dry Mouth Can Cause Cavities
If you suffer from dry mouth due to taking certain medications, lack of consistent oral hygiene, or for other reasons, you are more likely to develop cavities because saliva wicks bacteria off of your tooth surface. Try upping your water intake to keep your teeth clean!
