What Is TMJ?

TMJ is an abbreviation for “temporomandibular joints.” These two hinge-like joints on either side of your face connect your jawbone to your skull. Unfortunately, these joints can develop problems, causing pain and discomfort. TMJ disorders are often just called “TMJ.”

What Causes TMJ Disorders?

It’s often difficult to identify what is causing a person’s TMJ, but there are a few possibilities. Arthritis or an injury can damage the joint. The joints can also experience more stress if you have tooth or jaw misalignment. Tooth grinding, also known as bruxism, can cause or worsen TMJ, too. Not sure if you’re grinding your teeth at night? Grinding damages your tooth enamel, so a dentist can usually tell if you’re grinding your teeth a lot.

What Are the Symptoms of TMJ?

TMJ leads to a series of unpleasant symptoms, such as:

  • A clicking or popping sound when you open your jaw
  • Pain or tenderness in your jaw
  • Aching in your face and around your ear
  • Headaches
  • Pain when you chew or open your mouth

How Do You Treat TMJ?

There are several ways to treat TMJ, many of which are non-invasive. Eating softer foods, exercising your jaw, and trying medication are all options. If a misaligned bite is causing TMJ, dental treatments can make a big difference. At our office, we offer custom mouthguards to protect your teeth from nighttime grinding.
