What to Do for Tooth Pain?
January 19, 2024 6:52 pm |Tooth pain can disrupt your day in more ways than one. While there’s no universal way to stop tooth pain, here are our tips to help you deal with a stubborn toothache. What causes the toothache and how long you’ve experienced pain can help you find a solution that provides relief.
Clean the Area
Gently rinse your mouth with warm water to remove any debris or particles around the affected tooth. Avoid using hot or cold water, as extreme temperatures may exacerbate sensitivity. If you’ve experienced an injury to the mouth or have swelling, a saltwater rinse may offer relief.
Floss
Carefully floss between teeth to ensure there’s no trapped food or plaque irritating the tooth or gums. Be gentle to avoid making the pain worse.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relief
Non-prescription pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can provide temporary relief. Over-the-counter oral gels or creams with ingredients like benzocaine may help numb the affected area and provide short-term relief. Be sure to follow all printed instructions on any medication before you take it.
Cold Compress
If you notice any swelling, you can apply a cold compress to the area in 15-minute intervals. Always wrap compresses in cloth or a similar material to protect your skin.
Avoid Trigger Foods
Steer clear of extremely hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and beverages. These are often the primary culprits for tooth sensitivity triggers. These treats may worsen tooth sensitivity.
